You’re six years old. Mum’s in hospital. Dad says she’s ‘done something stupid’. She finds it hard to be happy. So you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world. Everything that’s worth living for. 1. Ice Cream. 2. Kung Fu Movies. 3. Burning Things. 4. Laughing so hard you shoot milk out your nose 5. Construction cranes. 6. Me. You leave it on her pillow. You know she’s read it because she’s corrected your spelling. Soon, the list will take on a life of its own.
About the play
The mother of a seven-year-old girl attempts suicide. "It was something stupid, something which happens when someone cannot be happy," she was told. The girl, wanting to help her mother, begins writing a list of every brilliant thing in the world worth living for. As an adult, she comes to tell us her story, asking the audience to play all the other characters.
Duncan Macmillan and Jonny Donahoe’s Every Brilliant Thing was first staged in 2013 in the United Kingdom and since then has been traveling around the world. Having won the Critics' Pick of the New York Times and rave reviews from the Guardian, Time Out, Independent, Evening Standard, Telegraph and Sunday Times, and after the huge success it enjoyed in England, America, Australia and New Zealand, the play was presented in Greece for the first time in the spring of 2017, directed by Ioli Andreadi, with Melina Theocharidou in the solo role.
